Why caring is the best business

Do you know the story of John Paul DeJoria, the co-founder of Paul Mitchell?

He started out at the bottom. Early in his life his parents divorced, he was doing poorly in school and he joined a street gang. A teacher even told him “you’ll never succeed at anything in life”.

In 1980, he was living out of a car when he and hairstylist Paul Mitchell got together and, with a $700 loan, they started the John Paul Mitchell Systems line of hair care products.

Today, his net worth is around 3 billion dollars.

How did he do it? Well, according to this recent article in Forbes magazine, “He works hard and gives back as much, if not more than he takes in. With each undertaking, he thinks not only of how much money can be made, but how he can help people, animals and the environment. Each business decision is always in line with a philanthropic decision.”

He did it because he’s very good at giving and thinking about others. In another article for Business Insider, John Paul said this:

“If I had to pick one moment that truly felt amazing, it was when I helped Mobile Loaves & Fishes build gardens and homes for those in need of shelter and food…I helped give someone a place to live, a garden to work at, and another chance at life. To this day, that’s where I feel most fulfilled in life. It’s having the ability and resources to provide more resources to those in need.”

I love great hair. A thousand times yes, we are all about great hair and esthetics at our salon. But as I’ve always said, beauty goes much deeper than what’s on the outside. Actually, the beauty inside is what counts most.

John Paul DeJoria gets this too, which is another reason why we love their company and products. From the quality of their products, to their treatment of animals or their care for the environment, they show how caring for others is not just good business. It’s the best business.

That’s why at Eliegante we’re so pleased to be a Paul Mitchell Focus + salon.

Another reason why we love Paul Mitchell

I had a guest come into the salon a few weeks ago. She needed a hair product that could hold her style through all the wind and heat of the summer. We’ve had a few good days, right? I said to her, “I can give you something that you can wear to the beach. In fact, go swimming, and your hair will still come out looking great.” She looked skeptical, but she took it.

She came back later amazed. It worked! Great hair, even at the beach! The product I gave her was a texturing cream, from the Paul Mitchell Neon line called Sugar Twist. We love this stuff, along with all Paul Mitchell hair care products. As a certified Focus+ salon, we have the products you need and the ongoing training to help you stay looking your best. The Neon line is fun and flexible, and is infused with natural sugar to add some healthy sweetness to your hair.

But this isn’t all Neon is about.

Paul Mitchell Neon promotes kindness and well being among teens with their ongoing anti-bullying campaign, which provides tools and support to help fight bullying. You can find out more about it by visiting their website or checking out social media at #StickItToBullying.

September is coming and soon it’ll be back to school for many teens (I have 3 daughters, I know!) and I’m proud to partner with a company that helps make schools safer and more positive. Looking your best is great, but feeling you best is greater. That’s why at Eliegante we proudly carry Paul Mitchell products and support their Bully Free Zone campaign.

What’s hiding under your hair?

Last month it was so great to be part of McMaster’s Shave-for-a-Cure event.  Seventeen people sat in our chairs and offered up their hair to support this great event.  One was even a Mac professor and his son!  You can see pictures of the event on our Facebook page.

It takes bravery to shave off all your hair.  It’s one thing to grow a moustache for Movember, but to lose your locks takes real courage!  Not only is it a whole new look, but often people have never seen what their head looks like fully exposed.  And sometimes, as one gentleman who came to me for a head shave found out, there is something hiding underneath: dry scalp.

Dry scalp is very common, especially around this time as the weather gets cold.  Your hair and skin lack moisture in the dry, cold air, and your lack of vitamin D in the wintertime can also affect your skin.  The result is a dandruff snowfall that’s far from flattering.

There are a few things you can do to fix dry scalp and keep the snow from falling.  First, drink more water.  Yes!  Make sure you’re hydrated to give your skin and hair a chance to gain extra moisture.  Keep an eye on your diet, too.  Your food intake affects your hair and skin just like your water intake.

Rinsing your hair thoroughly after a bath or shower is important too, to make sure there is no product build-up to sap your hair and scalp of moisture.  The longer or thicker your hair is, the more rinsing is needed to get all the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair and off your scalp.  Just take a bit more time to make sure this is done properly.

And finally, if you are in need of a medicated treatment, there are lots of options.  One product we carry that is an excellent solution for dry scalp is Phytopolléine Scalp Treatment from Phyto.  It’s 100 % botanical with a mix of essential oils and corn germ oil, and is good for all hair types.  This is the treatment my customer used and it worked great.  Keep the snow outside where it belongs!

On behalf of everyone here at Eliegante Hair Design & Spa, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!

Planting the seeds for great summer hair

It’s growing season! At Eliegante we’re busy these days making things beautiful inside and out. In between making bridal parties gorgeous and getting young prom princes and princesses ready for the ball, I’ve been outside fixing up the garden in front of the salon. We’re closed on Wednesday’s, so I spent yesterday afternoon weeding and cleaning up (my poor back!). Today I unloaded a heap of mulch to help curb weeds and hold the moisture for our tulips, hostas and daffodils that are already showing their brilliant colour.

There’s a lot that goes into making your garden ready for growing season: weeding, trimming, cultivating, adding mulch, and giving it plenty of water. Gardens don’t just grow beautifully on their own: they need care!
And, really, it’s a lot like caring for your hair.

When someone walks by my salon on Upper James Street with luxurious hair blowing in the hot summer breeze, I know she doesn’t have that look by accident. Her hair is the result of proper care. The summer can do damage to your hair if you’re not careful, so here are 5 tips to help you have great summer hair.

1. Start with a trim
Warmer weather leads to dryness, which for most people means split ends. Split ends are like the dandelions of hair! Some people are surprised to know that no product can fix split ends; they can only prevent them. So starting with a trim means that split ends can be cut away and we can work on strengthening the rest of the hair.

2. Add plenty of moisture
Here’s an easy tip to remember: give your hair what you give your face. If you apply a facial moisturizer for dry skin, chances are your hair needs moisture too. Using a leave-in conditioner or a once-a-week treatment will keep your hair looking shiny and soft.

3. Get the right shampoo
Make sure you choose the right shampoo for your hair. Professional products are designed to give your hair exactly what it needs, and there’s a product out there that’s suited to your needs. At Eliegante we feature Paul Mitchell Awapuhi and Phyto products.

4. Don’t forget to masque
Applying a hair masque every week to two weeks will ensure your hair is protected. If you have coloured hair, make sure you use a colour-safe masque.

5. Enjoy yourself
Once I get my garden all spruced up, I’m going to stand back and enjoy its beauty. Similarly, once you’ve taken these simple steps, it’s time to stroll into summer with ooh-la-la hair!

If you’d like to learn more about how to get your hair ready for summer, come by Eliegante Hair Design and Spa and we’ll provide you a free 15 minute consultation. I promise to leave the gardening gloves outside!

If you can’t tame the weather, tame your hair

I looked out my window today at the salon and thought, “Where is all the snow?”  It was warm and drizzling outside- in February!  Do I mind?  No.  My family is from Lebanon so we don’t do skating and my girls have grown too big to do much tobogganing (they do volleyball instead).  So I’m ok with a warm winter, but I know it can cause havoc with your hair.

winter-haircare-2-nov-14Cold Canadian winters usually dry hair out.  If you don’t have long hair you may think that all this warm, wet weather will help this problem.  Here’s some chair education: the dryness is still there!  Warm, winter air usually results in dry, elastic or bouncy hair.  And unless your workplace or spouse is okay with you wearing a toque all day, you’re going to have to tame that mane!

The key to taming any winter hair, whether it’s warm or cold out, is moisturizer.  A good soaking from a quality moisturizer will help keep your hair and scalp soft and resilient to the drying effect of our Canadian winter air.  You’re going to want a product that doesn’t add a lot of build-up, and keeps your hair from actually feeling wet all day (not good out in the cold).  I like the Awaphui Wild Ginger lineup from Paul Mitchell for these reasons.  They’re purposely designed to repair dry, damaged hair, are lightweight, don’t add a lot of build-up and give you the right amount of elasticity to help your hair keep its bounce and shape.

And while I joke about wearing a toque all day, hats do offer your hair mitch clean cutprotection during the winter. There are lots of cute caps in style now to protect your hair when you’re going to be outside for a long time.  And gentlemen, if you’re not already using a styling product, consider applying a flexible cream like Mitch Clean Cut or using a moisturizing conditioner during your shower.

I’m sure that you’ll have to break out your shovel sometime this winter and do some digging.  But whether things get white or stay green, look good while you’re out there!

Things You Should Be Doing This Winter For Healthy, Beautiful Hair

Now that the winter months are upon us and the days are much colder, it’s time to start thinking about ways to protect our hair from the damage that the winter elements can cause.

One very simple tip is to wear a hat when out as it keeps your hair covered from the wind, rain and snow. But as we all know, no woman wants the “dreaded hat hair.” A great way to avoid this is to wrap your hair in a silk scarf before putting on your cozy, wool beanie. This helps to protect your hair from damage caused by the hat rubbing against your hair and it also cuts down on the static. Another great way to combat static is to use a good heat styling product for blow drying such as the Mitchell  Heat OFF the Press  Protect and Shine Spray. This can also be used on dry hair before using a curling iron or flat iron.

During the winter months, it’s a great idea to treat your hair once a week to a deep conditioning treatment. This will help to replenish the moisture, which tends to get depleted from things such as the dry heat in your apartment and the cold winter air. I recommend something like the Awapuhui .KERATRIPLEX Two Step Repair .

What it does
KeraTriplex® Treatment transforms weak, broken and brittle strands into pillars of strength and protects from further damage

How it works Step one of the KeraTriplex® 2-step Repair Treatment, the single-shot vial of isolated proteins is virtually identical to the keratin found in human hair.

I also find if you can keep washing your hair to a minimum, say two to three times a week, this will prevent your hair from drying out too much. And always make sure you dry your hair before leaving the house. Not only because you will get a cold, but the moisture in your hair combined with the cold air, will add further damage to your hair by making it more brittle and dry.. Regular trims are a great way to keep your hair in good health during the winter months as well — every six to eight weeks, just get a light dusting of the ends to help reduce the chance of dry, splitting ends.

One unexpected secret to keep your hair looking good in the winter is to invest in a humidifier. I know you’re thinking that humidity equals frizzy hair, but when you have the heat on, the air in your apartment/ homes , becomes very dry and I find the humidifier helps stop your hair and skin from feeling dry.

Top 6 Hair-Styling Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping Regular Haircuts

Maintain your ‘do to make your life easier. “Haircuts have a shelf life of four to eight weeks before they start to lose shape and become harder to style, this is the truth .

Working with Too Much Hair at Once

Spend an afternoon at a salon and you’ll notice that the pros always use hair clips to divide and conquer a big styling job. The reason? It lets you concentrate the heat of your dryer or flatiron on one small section at a time. At home, split your hair into three horizontal layers. Pin the top and middle sections back with clips and work your way from the bottom up. Complete each section before moving on to the next, but if you’re in a hurry, spend more time styling the front and cheat a little in the back.

Forgetting Your Roots

If you pay more attention to your roots when you apply product and dry your hair, you’ll have more control over volume. Want more body? Then pull your hair up and out when drying. Want less? Pull your hair straight down to smooth and flatten the root. Treating your roots also saves your ends — the oldest and driest part of your hair — from excess heat damage.

Frying Your Strands

Use the low or medium heat settings on your styling tools. “Only extremely coarse or curly hair can handle the highest temperatures. Other ways to protect your hair: Mist with a heat protect styling spray, use a nozzle or diffuser attachment to disperse air flow, and don’t concentrate the heat in one spot for too long.

Using the Wrong Size Brush

Many women use a round brush that’s too small,. A small brush with a 1-inch-diameter barrel works best for chin-length hair, shorter layers, or if you want to add extra bounce to very fine hair. Medium to large brushes — 2- to 3-inch barrels — are better for longer hair and help you create loose, natural waves or straight, smooth styles.

Applying Product to Dry Hair

”Your hair is the most responsive to styling when it’s freshly shampooed or rinsed,”. It’s also easier to distribute product evenly throughout wet hair. (The exceptions to this rule are heat-protecting sprays, which you should apply to dry hair before you use hot tools, and finishing products like hair spray and pomades.)

JENNY MCCARTHY.

To achieve this easy glamorous style:

1.  Spray the roots of wet hair with a volumizing spray like phyto Actif or texture spray Awaphui from paul Mitchell.

2. Take small sections and blow dry with a medium sized round brush, concentrating volume on the roots and a bit of bend on the ends.

3. Take diamond shape sections and roll onto Velcro rollers in a downward motion. Put a bit of heat from the blow dryer onto each roller and allow to cool down

.4. Remove rollers and spray hair with a light hair spray, then brush out the hair with a paddle brush.

5. Apply a few drops of styling Treatment oil form Awaphui a shine serum, and mold ends into a soft curl.

6. Tease the root area lightly, and lightly brush to help hair stay to the side. Finish with a medium hold Hair Spray, or a Definition Hair Spray.

HOW-TO: Selena Rocks the Retro Glam Trend

The retro glam trend is picking up steam in and around Hollywood…and all over the country! We’ve seen this trend recently on various singers and actresses, most often done with a deep side part and sleek waves, and polished makeup and an uber-glam gown to complete the look. We saw it pop up on a few celebs at the CMAs earlier this month and now, just this week at the American Music Awards, as seen here on Selena Gomez. Want to get Selena’s look?the steps to recreate her style…plus the steps for another version of this hot look as seen on Jenny McCarthy.

SELENA GOMEZ.

1. Apply Volumizing Mousse on wet hair.

2. Blow dry hair in small sections from nape to crown with medium round brush, hold into a curl and apply heat thoroughly.

3. When you remove the brush, spray a bit of volumizing spray, and hold curl in place with a clip until it cools down; continue all over the head.

4. Once hair has cooled, remove clips, and if need be, curl some sections with a medium barrel curling iron. Apply a few drops of a shine serum.

5. Part hair to the side, lightly tease the crown for a bit of hold, and brush hair to the side, tucking a piece behind the ear. Finish with a medium hold spray.
