If you can’t tame the weather, tame your hair

I looked out my window today at the salon and thought, “Where is all the snow?”  It was warm and drizzling outside- in February!  Do I mind?  No.  My family is from Lebanon so we don’t do skating and my girls have grown too big to do much tobogganing (they do volleyball instead).  So I’m ok with a warm winter, but I know it can cause havoc with your hair.

winter-haircare-2-nov-14Cold Canadian winters usually dry hair out.  If you don’t have long hair you may think that all this warm, wet weather will help this problem.  Here’s some chair education: the dryness is still there!  Warm, winter air usually results in dry, elastic or bouncy hair.  And unless your workplace or spouse is okay with you wearing a toque all day, you’re going to have to tame that mane!

The key to taming any winter hair, whether it’s warm or cold out, is moisturizer.  A good soaking from a quality moisturizer will help keep your hair and scalp soft and resilient to the drying effect of our Canadian winter air.  You’re going to want a product that doesn’t add a lot of build-up, and keeps your hair from actually feeling wet all day (not good out in the cold).  I like the Awaphui Wild Ginger lineup from Paul Mitchell for these reasons.  They’re purposely designed to repair dry, damaged hair, are lightweight, don’t add a lot of build-up and give you the right amount of elasticity to help your hair keep its bounce and shape.

And while I joke about wearing a toque all day, hats do offer your hair mitch clean cutprotection during the winter. There are lots of cute caps in style now to protect your hair when you’re going to be outside for a long time.  And gentlemen, if you’re not already using a styling product, consider applying a flexible cream like Mitch Clean Cut or using a moisturizing conditioner during your shower.

I’m sure that you’ll have to break out your shovel sometime this winter and do some digging.  But whether things get white or stay green, look good while you’re out there!

Which Hairstyling Product Should MEN Use?

Some guys don’t give a ton of extraneous thought to their hair—that is, beyond washing it each day and wondering if/when/where it’s going to start falling out. If that’s you, then updating your hairstyle to sync with the season or to project a new image probably seems like a lot more hassle than it’s worth. Trust us, we feel you on that. But whether you’ve been using the same gel or mousse since you were in high school—or have never put anything in your hair at all—it’s a lot easier than you might think to switch up your look simply by switching up your product
– *Hair Gel: Use it if you have short to medium hair, you can go for a “wet” look with gel
*Pomade: If you want a hold that’s a little bit more pliable It’s great for that “behead” look.
*Mousse: Guys with longer hair should consider using mousse. It’ll give you more control and definition than using nothing at all , but your hair can still move naturally.
* Hair Spray: To max out the hold on longer hair, use hair spray. It will control frizz and flyaway’s without making your hair feel sticky.

What is a bouffant?

Not everything about the coming year is focused on the modern and effortless. Pay homage to the 1960s with playful bouffant styles that will have you relishing in nostalgia for a time when big hair and bigger eyelashes were the look of choice. After the break, the best 1960s inspired hairstyles to try in 2013. What is a bouffant? A bouffant hairstyle translates to a big hairstyle. To get this hairstyle the hair is teased leaving the crown of the hair looking really full or volumized. Today, bouffant hairstyles come in a variety of shapes and sizes but the effect remains the same: they exude confidence and class. On the runway for spring 2013 we’ve seen a number of key shows indulge in elegant, retro-inspired bouffants – most of them include a deep side part and plenty of volume. Make sure there is enough texture and support in the hair to make the style hold. In this example we’ve kept the texture just enough to add volume but not so much to make the style messy. For night time, or to really add to the sixties sex kitten feel of the look you can add even more texture. To keep the texture in place use a volumising mousse. Separate the hair into sections and curl it, away from the face, using either a curling iron or hot rollers. On Rhiannon’s hair a ghd hair iron was used to create curls throughout the hair.Brush the curls out to break them up and give them a softer, more natural look. Separate out a circular section of hair at the top of the crown. You can use a mirror to see the back of your head if creating the style on yourself.Next, divide the section into smaller partings. These will be back-combed, starting at the back so it’s easier to build up volume and height.Hold the very back parting with medium tension and with a comb work the root area only. Back-combing, if done right, shouldn’t cause too much damage to your hair and shouldn’t knot. Tip: work the comb about an inch away from scalp, put comb in and work in curved movements down to root area, take comb out of root area and repeat. Follow the same back-combing process with each of the partings of hair. After all the back-combing is completed your hair should look something like this. Don’t worry if it’s messy at this stage – only a few more steps until you have a sixties Brigitte Bardot bouffant hairdo. Softly brush the very top layer of hair back, smoothing it over the back-combed section. Work your bouffant shape into the desired height and roundness, then pull back the hair and pin it in the centre with bobby pins to hold it in place. To add polish to your sixties Brigitte Bardot hairstyle bring two more smaller side sections of hair into the style. Pin the two side sections in place. Tip: lightly twist each side into the centre as you do this to help create balance and a smoother finish.Spray the hair lightly all over with a firm hold hairspray to finish. And that’s it: you now have a simple to complete, subtle take on 60s sex kitten hair. While this is a modern take, you can make the style more extreme and more authentically Brigitte Bardot by exaggerating the curls and the back combed texture even more.Should you have any further questions on how to or would like to comment on the hair style feel free to leave us a comment on facebook or email us eliegante.cominfo@eliegante.com

How to free flowing blow dried hair???

It’s important to get the optimum bounce in the roots and ensure the soft waves frame the face. Here’s how to get it right:

  • Towel-dry your hair and apply any variety of blow-dry enhancing cream to the roots. The product will create texture and hold.
  • Section the hair and blow-dry using a round brush. Brush away from the roots to create volume.
  • Once the hair is dry, make a centre-part and brush the hair out. This will give the bounce and fullness to the locks.
  • If you want fuller, longer-lasting waves; leave the hair to set in a few large rollers. Be sure to roll the hair in the direction you want.
  • Spray hairspray on a paddle hairbrush and gently comb away from the parting in the direction of the hair. This will settle the visible flyaway strands around the crown.

Fashion Week

Runways While fashion week is about fantasy and illusion, the most captivating trends from the fall shows emphasized wearable texture, natural ease and feminine approachability. From polished ponytails to unfussy strands left free around the shoulders, hairstylists offered up plenty of inspirational  and achievable  ideas that float from the runway to the real world surprisingly well. Precise Pony The ponytail always plays a part in fashion week and this season it was all about concise, perfectly pulled-back looks. Hair was prepped with styling treatment oil from Awapuhi to prevent frizz and add shine, then flat-ironed into sleek curtains. To secure the base, using simple elastics carefully concealed with a few loose strands.

6 Steps to Salon-Perfect Hair Color.

Are you getting what you expecting????? How many times have you walked out of a salon feeling less than excited about your new color? Getting the vision in your head to show up, well, on your head can be a complicated process. Here are 6 foolproof steps to ensure you leave the salon with color you’ll love. First, consider your complexion and your eye color. “The human eye is naturally attracted to light colors,” Dark hair brings the focus to the skin, whereas lighter hair brings the focus to the hair. You want to find a balance and draw attention to your best features .To Cut or Color First? If you decide to do a cut and color on the same day, be sure to get the cut first. As a Colorist I believe the color should follow the cut so they can complement each other, “the hair color should accentuate the cut and should add movement to the overall finished appearance. Highlights and lowlights are the means to add depth and dimension.” Pick the Right Colorist. Your colorist should be able to discuss whether or not the look you are hoping for is suitable for you. If he or she is not willing to take the time to answer your questions and can’t give you a straight answer on what you can expect, move on. The key to a great color experience is choosing “someone you trust,” Communicate Like a Pro. When explaining what kind of look you want, think about your lifestyle. Are you more conservative or more creative? Are you looking for something more on the bold side or something more sophisticated? How often can you return to the salon for touch-ups? All of this information will help your colorist. It’s also a good idea to bring a picture to use as a reference so your colorist can see what look you are going for. Damage Control. What should you do if your hair is damaged? Give it a rest! A good colorist will advise you to let your hair heal before attempting to color it. Trust me, you’ll thank him or her later. Conditioning and strengthening treatments are a must to bring moisture and thickness back into the hair. And remember — no color is going to look great on split ends or broken strands. The Final Assessment. @ Eliegante Hair Design My team believes you can judge good color by whether it improves your confidence and ability to go out and be who you want to be. “It’s just like clothing,”. “When you wear a suit or evening gown you feel classy, so you act classy. When you’re in sweats around the house, you feel more relaxed and carefree. Your hair is the same way. It’s like a new outfit. It should always suit the person you are, or the person you want to become.”  thank you all
