Summer Styles

Summer is here and the temperature is rising! Whether you’re planning to sun or swim, your hair is at increased risk for dryness and breakage…gasp! Thankfully, Eliegante Hair Design has come to the rescue!Going for a swim? Salt buildup can lead to dry, hard to manage hair, and chlorine can cause cuticle damage and split ends. That’s because the chemicals strip away sebum, a natural scalp lubricant. To prevent this, treat your mane before or after hitting the water. Elie suggests that prior to the pool or beach, wet your hair with fresh water and apply a leave-in conditioner. You can us a special shampoo from PAUL Mitchell will help restore shine and strip away chemicals. Fun in the sun? UVA and UVB  Rays  have the power to damage your hair, too! I  says that signs of sun-damaged hair include brittleness and dryness, broken or split ends, frizz, faded color, and even weakened or thinning hair. I emphasizes the importance of protecting products that contain UVB absorbers, seal the hair shaft to prevent humidity, and moisturize with natural proteins and extracts (Try: Awapuhi Wild Ginger keratin treatment, or PhytoKarite Mask). These days, many Professional Products leave in conditioners, products for styling and hairsprays contain sunscreen – perfect for preventing fading or lightening of colored hair. Ready to step off the hair-color merry-go-round once and for all?

Don’t confuse low with no maintenance. Gray can be glamorous but requires some upkeep, including extra attention to makeup and accessories. If you’ve been coloring your hair, it takes about a year to grow out grays. “Get lowlights with a shorter hairstyle to make the transition easier,”  Gray strands can look dingy because they’re more coarse and porous, so use a gloss to boost shine and a violet-tinted shampoo to correct yellow tones and a big smile.

Grow It Long

Thinking of growing it out? Demi Moore proves that long hair can look amazing even when you’re over 40… “It’s easy for long hair to look dull and ratty and overdue for a cut,” You need to get regular trims and use the right  shampoo and conditioner, plus a hair mask ones a week   to keep your strands glossy and healthy.

Straighten It

You prefer to smooth away your spirals, don’t go too flat. “When you get older, that poker-straight look is much too severe,” . For a bouncy blowout, I like to prep wet curls with a heat-protecting mousse. “It will give you lift at the roots and keep the ends smooth,” I say. Clip hair into sections and blow until it’s nearly dry, using a paddle brush. Switch to a round brush to polish the top layer and ends.

Top 6 Hair-Styling Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping Regular Haircuts

Maintain your ‘do to make your life easier. “Haircuts have a shelf life of four to eight weeks before they start to lose shape and become harder to style, this is the truth .

Working with Too Much Hair at Once

Spend an afternoon at a salon and you’ll notice that the pros always use hair clips to divide and conquer a big styling job. The reason? It lets you concentrate the heat of your dryer or flatiron on one small section at a time. At home, split your hair into three horizontal layers. Pin the top and middle sections back with clips and work your way from the bottom up. Complete each section before moving on to the next, but if you’re in a hurry, spend more time styling the front and cheat a little in the back.

Forgetting Your Roots

If you pay more attention to your roots when you apply product and dry your hair, you’ll have more control over volume. Want more body? Then pull your hair up and out when drying. Want less? Pull your hair straight down to smooth and flatten the root. Treating your roots also saves your ends — the oldest and driest part of your hair — from excess heat damage.

Frying Your Strands

Use the low or medium heat settings on your styling tools. “Only extremely coarse or curly hair can handle the highest temperatures. Other ways to protect your hair: Mist with a heat protect styling spray, use a nozzle or diffuser attachment to disperse air flow, and don’t concentrate the heat in one spot for too long.

Using the Wrong Size Brush

Many women use a round brush that’s too small,. A small brush with a 1-inch-diameter barrel works best for chin-length hair, shorter layers, or if you want to add extra bounce to very fine hair. Medium to large brushes — 2- to 3-inch barrels — are better for longer hair and help you create loose, natural waves or straight, smooth styles.

Applying Product to Dry Hair

”Your hair is the most responsive to styling when it’s freshly shampooed or rinsed,”. It’s also easier to distribute product evenly throughout wet hair. (The exceptions to this rule are heat-protecting sprays, which you should apply to dry hair before you use hot tools, and finishing products like hair spray and pomades.)

6 Steps to Salon-Perfect Hair Color

Are you getting what you expecting?????How many times have you walked out of a salon feeling less than excited about your new color? Getting the vision in your head to show up, well, on your head can be a complicated process. Here are 6 foolproof steps to ensure you leave the salon with color you’ll love.First, consider your complexion and your eye color. “The human eye is naturally attracted to light colors,” Dark hair brings the focus to the skin, whereas lighter hair brings the focus to the hair. You want to find a balance and draw attention to your best featuresTo Cut or Color First? If you decide to do a cut and color on the same day, be sure to get the cut first. As a  Colorist I  believe the color should follow the cut so they can complement each other, “the hair color should accentuate the cut and should add movement to the overall finished appearance. Highlights and lowlights are the means to add depth and dimension.”Pick the Right Colorist. Your colorist should be able to discuss whether or not the look you are hoping for is suitable for you. If he or she is not willing to take the time to answer your questions and can’t give you a straight answer on what you can expect, move on. The key to a great color experience is choosing “someone you trust,” Communicate Like a Pro When explaining what kind of look you want, think about your lifestyle. Are you more conservative or more creative? Are you looking for something more on the bold side or something more sophisticated? How often can you return to the salon for touch-ups? All of this information will help your colorist. It’s also a good idea to bring a picture to use as a reference so your colorist can see what look you are going for. Damage Control: What should you do if your hair is damaged? Give it a rest! A good colorist will advise you to let your hair heal before attempting to color it. Trust me, you’ll thank him or her later. Conditioning and strengthening treatments are a must to bring moisture and thickness back into the hair. And remember — no color is going to look great on split ends or broken strands. The Final Assessment@ Eliegante Hair Design My team believes you can judge good color by whether it improves your confidence and ability to go out and be who you want to be. “It’s just like clothing,”. “When you wear a suit or evening gown you feel classy, so you act classy. When you’re in sweats around the house, you feel more relaxed and carefree. Your hair is the same way. It’s like a new outfit. It should always suit the person you are, or the person you want to become.”Elie Assaf owner

Using the right tools will always help you

Eliegante’s Beauty in the New Economy Today’s financial headlines are often bleak. Words like “recession” and “inflation” appear in nearly every article and reading them send chills up my spine. The most recent stories suggest that the economy has started to recover, and I sigh with relief reading that the worst was behind us. Anyone who talks the truth will have to admit they have been affected by this recession. As our savings have gone down, we all have become hyper aware of our spending habits. Whether consciously or not, we have all made lists of what we can cut from our budgets. Certainly, taking care of your hair can be an expensive proposition. Does this mean you should forsake your beauty and grooming routines? I think not! Maintaining your confidence and self-esteem has never been more important. It’s a tough and competitive world out there. If you don’t think looking good makes a difference in getting a job or the promotion of your dreams, you’re making a big mistake. Contrary to what the old adage says, we often do judge a book by its cover. Your appearance can say as much about you as your resume. So, it is vital always to look your best. I am not suggesting you spend your last dollar on a blow-Dray or a touch-up color or Highlights. There are many inexpensive and relatively easy ways to maintain your beauty routine..
